Don't Hibernate — Ride Year Round

The Isle of Man is wet. There's no getting around it. But the island's mild temperatures and lack of hard frost mean that with the right approach, you can ride trails comfortably all year. Many riders find winter riding uniquely satisfying — quieter trails, dramatic light, and a real sense of earning your descents.

Rider Essentials

Waterproof Layering

The key is layers. A moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a breathable waterproof shell will see you through most conditions. Avoid cotton — it stays wet and cold. Merino wool base layers are excellent for temperature regulation.

Mudguards

A quality downtube guard and rear mudguard will dramatically reduce the amount of cold water and mud hitting your face and back. Your riding mates will also appreciate the rear guard.

Gloves & Footwear

Cold hands and feet end rides early. Waterproof gloves (or a thin liner under a shell glove) and waterproof trail shoes make a huge difference. Neoprene overshoes are worth their weight in gold on truly miserable days.

Bike Maintenance Increases in Winter

Mud, grit, and water accelerate wear on every component. In winter, you should:

  • Clean and lube your chain after every muddy ride — use a wet lube designed for wet conditions
  • Check your brake pads more frequently — mud and grit eat through pads quickly
  • Rinse your bike after rides — a gentle rinse (not a pressure washer) removes corrosive grit from pivots and bearings
  • Check pivot bearings monthly — winter is hardest on these; a dry, creaky pivot is one needing attention
  • Re-grease and re-torque bolts — water ingress causes corrosion; periodic disassembly and regreasing extends component life

Trail Etiquette in Winter

Wet trails are more susceptible to damage. Avoid riding on saturated ground where possible, stick to hardpack and forestry tracks after heavy rain, and always fill in any ruts you create. The Isle of Man's trails are largely natural and unmanaged — what we do in winter shapes what we have in summer.
